The graphite core of each reactor weighed 2000 tons and consisted of accurately machined graphite bricks and tiles built up to form a cylinder 50ft 6in, in diameter and 28ft high.

In the central portion of this structure were the 3288 vertical fuel channels arranged in the form of a square lattice and sub-divided into groups. In the centre of each group was a further channel for a control rod.
